Mr.   Charles Bolden, Administrator of the National Aeronautic al Space Administration (NASA) in the United States will be the keynote speaker.  Mr Sergei Krikalev, Head o f the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre in Moscow---and record holder for the human to have spent the longest cu mulative time in space---will also participate, along wi th space scientists and scholars from Handong Global Univ ersity (Republic of Korea), Vanderbilt University   and the Space Telescope Science Institute (  both U nited States).  Noted authors Dava Sobel (“Galile o’s Daughter”) and Howard Scherry (on Antoine de St-E xupery) will also speak; students will form the greater part of the audience.  The event, from 10 am to 1 p m New York time will be webcast.
The General Assembly, in its res olution A/RES/65/271 of 7 April 2011, declared 12 April as the International Day of Human Space Flight “to cel ebrate each year at the international level the beginnin g of the space era for mankind, reaffirming the important contribution of space science and technology in achievi ng sustainable development goals and increasing the well -being of States and peoples, as well as ensuring the re alization of their aspiration to maintain outer space for peaceful purposes.”
12 April 1961 was the date o f the first human space flight, carried out by Yuri Gagar in, a Soviet citizen. This historic event opened the way for space exploration for the benefit of all humanity. The General Assembly expressed its deep conviction of th e common interest of mankind in promoting and expanding t he exploration and use of outer space, as the province o f all mankind, for peaceful purposes and in continuing e fforts to extend to all States the benefits derived ther efrom.
