Business Planning for Protected Areas:
An Online Course
UNESCO-World Heritage Centre, The Nature
Conservancy and Washington State University in collaboration with members
of the Conservation Finance Alliance are offering an innovative online
training program on Business Planning for Protected Areas to facilitate
access to the essential information and tools you need to accelerate the
formulation of long-term solutions to the financial needs of protected
areas.
The online course covers four modules
and takes an average of 25 hours. The course can be completed over
a flexible period of 2-3 months (day/night/weekends), starting on January
31st, 2008. Spanish and English version are available. Registration deadline
extended January 31st, 2008
The renowned Washington State University
(WSU) http://capps.wsu.edu/SustainableFinance
will provide certification the following
levels of certification:
ˇ Certificate of Completion:
Awarded for completion of the entire program and passing the basic tests
included in each lesson.
ˇ Certificate of Achievement:
Awarded for completion of the entire program, passing tests for every module,
and delivering an agreed upon product, e.g., a draft protected area business
plan, a strategy document for a specific environmental fiscal reform.
ˇ In addition, WSU will offer
a Certificate of Competency, which will be awarded to selected participants
of the Achievement Certificate (e.g. best 30 students) for completion of
the all the requirements for the Achievement Certificate and an additional
test through WSU or certified academic unit, and the completion of a face-to-face
problem-solving workshop.
Who should take Business Planning for
Protected Areas?
The course has been designed for conservation
professionals with a protected areas focus: protected area managers, financial
managers, administrative managers, and program managers working either
within a government or non-governmental organization. The course
is appropriate for professionals working on both specific sites and national
systems of protected areas. Although no previous academic qualifications
are required, a basic understanding of protected area finances is recommended.

Planning
Module 2: Business plans for individual
protected areas
Module 3: Business plans for protected
area systems
Module 4: Resource Mobilization, Policy
and Financial Mechanisms
