Seeing the Unseeable

Viendo lo invisible


The limits of our senses confront the limitlessness of the universe.

Los limites de nuestros sentidos enfrentan lo ilimitado del universo.

Within the confines of the ordinary, vision is the most reliable tool we have. But some of the most extraordinary parts of nature, those that lie at the frontiers of science, can't be seen at all.

Dentro de los confines de lo común u ordinario, la visión es la herramienta más confiable que tenemos. Pero para algunas de las partes mas extraordinarias de la naturaleza, como las que yacen en la frontera de la ciencia, la visión es inservible.

Dark matter, for example, the invisible, mysterious material. Doesn't emit light, it doesn't reflect light, and it doesn't absorb light. It's not dark, as the name suggests—dark matter is completely, inherently unseeable.

La materia oscura es un material misterioso e invisible. No emite luz, no la refleja ni la absorbe. Como su nombre lo indica, tampoco es oscura, es inherentemente invisible.

While we are unable to see dark matter itself, we are able to create maps of it, pinpointing
its location by observing the effects of its mass on light from distant galaxies. Einstein's general theory of relativity predicts that a massive object will curve the fabric of space, and light will follow this deformed path. So we can look at how light from galaxies has been bent and infer the quantity and location of the matter that did the bending.

A pesar de ser invisible, podemos observar los efectos de su masa sobre la luz procedente de galaxias distantes.  Podemos hacer mapas de ella señalando su localización. Einstein predijo su existencia y su poder de curvar el espacio y deformar el recorrido de la luz. Observando esta deformación se puede inferir la cantidad y localización de esa materia oscura.

In one sense, the image is categorically sublime.Scientists have taken something that cannot be seen, and they've let us see it. ...... and given it an accessible beauty.

En un sentido, la imagen ( ver abajo) es sublime, pues los científicos han tomado algo que no se puede ver y nos lo hacen ver.  ..... como una belleza accesible !!!

Unlike normal matter, dark matter is not made up of charged particles.
We are constantly being irradiated by the billions of dark matter particles that pass through our bodies every second, but these particles will never touch our flesh or our organs.

A diferencia de la materia normal, la oscura no esta hecha de partículas cargadas. Estamos siendo constantemente irradiados por miles de millones de esas partículas que atraviesan nuestro cuerpo cada segundo y ni siquiera toca nuestra carne u órganos.

Visible objects are all composed of atoms that emit light within a certain frequency range; they're all macroscopic; and they all exist in our three spatial dimensions.

Los objetos visibles están compuestos de átomos que emiten luz dentro de cierto rango de frecuencia; todos ellos son macroscópicos y existen en nosotros como imágenes en tres dimensiones espaciales.

An object that is so small it obeys the laws of quantum mechanics (an electron in an atom, for example) can exist in many locations at one instant in time. But when we measure the location of the electron, when we look at it, it collapses into one spot. We cannot observe it in its natural state, and any image of an atom, from the oversimplified but popular solar system model to a computer-generated graphic of foggy orbitals, will be unable to fully capture this amazing idea that by seeing the electron, we change it.

Un objeto tan pequeño, como el electrón del átomo, que obedece a las leyes de la mecánica quántica, puede estar en muchos sitios a la vez. Podemos calcular su posición y lo podemos ubicar en un punto, pero no lo podemos observar en su estado natural. Al intentar dibujarlos de manera simplificada como un sistema solar o por medio de una computadora, los modificamos.

When science presents us with an image of dark matter, of electron orbitals, of general relativity, of anything fundamentally unseeable, it teases us. The visual draws us in with its incredible elegance; it lets us think for just a moment that the secrets of the universe are spread out before our eyes. And then, as we start to read the text that inevitably accompanies the picture, it hits us: Our eyes will never be as big as our science. Our visual system is the best source of intuitive information, the kind of stuff that we need to survive, but it gives us only a shadow of the greater world.

Cuando los científicos nos presentan una imagen de la materia oscura, de las orbitas de los electrones, de la relatividad en general, o de algo no visible, nos están haciendo trampa. La visión nos lo pinta con increíble elegancia, nos permite pensar por un momento que lo estamos viendo en su estado natural (nos lo imaginamos), pero al leer el texto, que inevitable acompaña esas imágenes, nos desilusiona: "Nuestros ojos no son tan grandes como nuestra ciencia”.

A pesar de que nuestro sistema visual es nuestro mejor recurso intuitivo para la información o para sobrevivir, solo nos permite ver una sombra de ese gran mundo.

Scientists and other curious people have always needed to turn unseeable phenomena into visuals. Experimentation is the art of prodding some invisible aspect of nature and turning its response into something we can see.

Los científicos y otras personas curiosas siempre han necesitado transformar fenómenos no visibles en visibles.

We bring the world to us, giving ourselves a simple image that lets us learn about a universe that doesn't care whether or not we can understand it.

Nos conectamos con el universo al formarnos una imagen simple que nos permita conocerlo, pero a él le tiene sin cuidado si llegamos a entenderlo o no !!!
