JOB TITLE:                                                   Science
Coordinator - Northern Tropical Andes Conservation Program

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:



The Northern Tropical Andes Science Coordinator provides leadership,
technical expertise and general guidance to advance conservation
priority-setting and measuring conservation progress for the Conservancy's
Northern Tropical Andes Conservation Program. Helps to identify priority
ecoregions where Conservancy programs should focus conservation efforts.
Produces and analyzes conservation portfolios to guide strategic
programmatic priorities. Writes papers and makes presentations on methods
and results to external and internal audiences. Organizes and leads expert
workshops to complement and/or refine priority-setting efforts, provides
ongoing tracking of conservation status across portfolios, participates in
peer reviews of ecoregional assessments, assists in working with
government agencies on conservation planning issues. Builds partnerships
with appropriate institutions to gather information as required, and to
export methods and products to other institutions and agencies.
Coordinates the development of threat assessments, threat forecasting, and
approaches for understanding conservation at multiple scales. Collaborates
with Conservancy scientists and other private and public sector scientists
and scientific institutions to bring the best available science
information and practices to enhance the conservation practices of the
Conservancy. Provides technical input to fundraising proposals and may
help in presentations as required.





KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

ˇ         Graduate degree ecology, environmental planning, conservation
biology, landscape architecture, or related field and 3 to 5 years related
experience.  Two years work experience in developing land management,
ecosystem, or biodiversity conservation plans.

ˇ         Knowledge of current trends in the specific field.

ˇ         Demonstrated experience in MS Office, Word, and Excel.  May
require database management skills with ability to produce reports.
Ability to use advanced computer functions including navigating the
Internet.  Ability to manipulate, analyze and interpret data.

ˇ         Experience with GIS systems such as ARCINFO or ARCVIEW,
including Access, graphical, and database software packages.

ˇ         Experienced in participating on planning teams and in
understanding conservation planning methods.

ˇ         Solid researching, writing, editing, oral communications skills.
 Demonstrated excellence in technical writing.

ˇ         Fluency in English and Spanish.

ˇ         Design, implement, and direct multiple projects, setting
deadlines and ensuring program accountability.

ˇ         Resolves complex issues independently within program area.
Experiments to find creative solutions.

ˇ         Work is diversified and may not always fall under established
practices and guidelines.

ˇ         Identifies and disseminates lessons learned, best practices and
methods, tools, consistencies and inconsistencies across plans.



DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:

ˇ         Makes sound decisions based on analysis, experience and judgement.

ˇ         Opportunity to act independently.

ˇ         Decisions may affect other staff in program area.



RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT -FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY:

ˇ         Financial responsibility may include working within a budget to
complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting
with budget development, and meeting fundraising targets.

ˇ         May serve as a team leader for assigned projects and coordinate
the work of others.



COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:

ˇ         Communication and presentation skills; ability to persuasively
convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups.

ˇ         Solicit program support through clear written communications,
including proposal writing and other written materials.

ˇ         Work in partnership with other organizations in a collaborative
or advisory role.

ˇ         May assist in developing and implementing collaborative, pilot
conservation planning projects with private conservation organizations and
governmental agencies.

ˇ         Communicates on lay, technical, and scientific levels to
internal/external audiences.



WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

ˇ         Capacity to handle complex tasks under pressure and under
stringent time constraints.

ˇ         Ability to work long hours, travel extensively and on short notice.

ˇ         Ability to work in variable weather conditions, remote locations
and often in physically demanding circumstances. Work requires occasional
physical exertion and/or muscular strain.  Work involves several
disagreeable elements and/or exposure to job hazard's where there is some
possibility of injury.
