Lima, Oct 19, 2001 (EFE via COMTEX) -- The Peruvian government has declared
an environmental emergency on the Nanay River, where high levels of mercury
have been detected.
The congressional Environment, Ecology and Amazonia Commission on Friday
also approved a bill to suspend all mining activity in the area for one
month, while the Energy and Mining Ministry conducts an investigation.
The Nanay River supplies drinking water to 400,000 residents of Iquitos,
capital of the Amazonian province of Loreto, Commission Chairman Jorge
Chavez said.
The Nanay is also one of the region's main sources of food and economic
activity for the 25,200 people living along its banks.
