Americans Celebrate National Teacher Day
Thousands of communities took time out May 3, 2005 to honor their local
educators and acknowledge the contributions they make to our lives. This year's
theme was: Thank a teacher for making public schools great!
Listen to
the latest radio spot (MP3) by NEA President Reg
Weaver to learn why teacher appreciation should be
year-round.
While it does take a lot of people to make a school succeed, National
Teacher Day focused on the teachers who work to make public schools
great places for students to succeed in life. We chose this day to specifically
honor teachers and recognize the lasting contributions they make to our
lives.
It is celebrated on the Tuesday of the first full week of May, so the actual
date varies each year.
We especially dedicate this day to those teachers who are serving in the
U.S. military forces. We all wish
them a safe and speedy return.
The whole week -- this year May 1-7 -- was designated Teacher
Appreciation Week by the National PTA.
We’d like to acknowledge and thank the board, staff and volunteers of
Teachers Count for their support of America ’s teachers. You’ll find more

History
The origins of Teacher Day are murky. Around 1944 Arkansas teacher Mattye
Whyte Woodridge began corresponding with political and education leaders about
the need for a national day to honor teachers. Woodbridge wrote to
Eleanor Roosevelt who in 1953 persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim a National
Teacher Day.
NEA along with its Kansas and Indiana state affiliates and the Dodge
City (Kan. ) local lobbied Congress to create a
national day celebrating teachers. Congress declared March 7, 1980, as National
Teacher Day for that year only.
NEA and its affiliates continued to observe Teacher Day on the first Tuesday
in March until 1985, when the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week
as the first full week of May. The NEA Representative Assembly then voted to
make the Tuesday of that week National Teacher Day.
