DEGREE PROGRAMMES


Bachelor of Arts Degree Programme in Social Sciences

The BA Degree programme in Social Sciences is offered by the Department of Social Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, through distance education mode. Three subject disciplines of Economics, Sociology and Mass Communication are offered in the English medium. This programme is a six credit programme. It is designed to cater to the higher educational needs of those who are employed in the private and public sectors. Students need to earn six credits from a combination of 18 courses offered at levels 3, 4 and 5. Optional courses are offered only at levels 4 and5.

Entry Requirements

Those who have reached 18 years of age or more on the closing date of applications and possess the qualifications mentioned below will be admitted to the study programme.

  1. Successfully completed a minimum of three credits and SSF 1304 of the Foundation Programme in Social Sciences of the Open University OR
  2. Those who have successfully completed any other programme offered at level 2 by the Faculty of HSS of the Open University and have earned a total of 2 credits including SSF 1304 OR
  3. Secured three passes at one sitting of the GCE (A/L) examination from among the subjects of Economics, commerce and Finance, Elements of political science, History, Ceylon History, European History, Indian History, Logic, and Geography and Business statistics.
  4. Other academic qualifications acceptable to the Senate of the Open University.

All applicants in Category C should sit the Admission/Grading Test administered by Dept. of Language Studies of the Faculty of HSS and obtain 50 marks or above in order to register for the programme.
