The Council of the
National University of Samoa, in its meeting on September 30, 1999, approved
the offering of a Bachelor of Science Degree with majors in Mathematics and
Computing, and electives in Chemistry, Physics, Chemistry, Technology, or
Geography.
The design of the BSc
incorporates all of the existing programs. This will permit graduates from the
existing Programs in Diploma in Mathematics and Computing, and Certificate in
Mathematics, Computing and Science to progress easily to the next higher level
one culminating in a:
BSc degree with a single major [BSc (Mathematics), or
BSc (Computing)]
OR a
BSc degree with a double major [BSc(Mathematics,
Computing)]
The Bachelor of Science Degree requires a total of 20 courses
with the following distribution by level depending on whether it is a degree
programme with a single major or a double major.
For a Single Major BSc
Programme, the total number of courses by level should be:
|
First
Year Courses: |
|
8 |
|
Second
Year Courses: |
8 |
Third
Year Courses: |
4 |

For a Double Major BSc
Programme, the total number of courses by level should be:
|
First
Year Courses: |
|
8 |
|
Second
Year Courses: |
6 |
Third
Year Courses: |

Basic Certificate in Science Programme
Full-time
programme
The programme consists of
eight (8) courses to be selected from existing pre-degree courses plus the
required English course: ENO010 Advanced Language Skills.
Of this total, six should
be selected from the core course category and two from the "elective category"
and one required course.
Core
Courses
The student must select at
least three (3) core courses in the first semester. In the second semester,
the student must take the second series of courses for those that were taken
in semester one.

Elective courses
The student (who selects
only three core courses per semester from the above category) may take only
one of the following courses each semester.

Certificate Programme:
This programme consists of
six (6) courses selected from the available courses as defined below. The full
load at this level (equivalent of a first year degree programme) should be
four (4) courses per semester. However, a candidate taking the Certificate in
Science Programme may take only three courses per semester as a full load. A
student has a few options in selecting courses for the Certificate in Science
Programme:
- The student may select
all three courses from the core courses category in the first semester.
Under this circumstance, the student must select the second series of the
same courses for semester two.
- The student may select
only two courses from the available core courses in semester one. Under this
circumstance, the student may take only one other course from the elective
course category in semester one. Semester two courses must be the second
series of the first semester courses.
- A student is allowed to
enrol in four courses per semester as long as she/he satisfies conditions
(1) and (2) above.
