Dear colleagues,

 

The Environment and Natural Resources Centre (CEMARNA) of the University of Pinar del Rio (UPR) summons to participate in the First International Workshop about Conservation and Management of the Biological Diversity (COMADIBIO, 2003) which is a congress that comes up from the debates in Cuba and all over the world about the need of achieving a harmony between the conservation and development of all species in our planet.

 

We will feel very honoured with your presence in such international congress COMADIBIO 2003, which will be a good opportunity to exchange experiences and share ideas about the main theme of the event “The conservation and management of the biological diversity in all around the World. That is why I send you my most friendly invitation.

 

The First international Workshop about Conservation and Management of the Biological Diversity (COMADIBIO 2003) will take place in the Botanic  Garden “Orquideario de Soroa”, located near Havana city in the territory of the biosphere reserve “Sierra del Rosario” (National Prize of Environment in the Republic of Cuba), it is hosted by several institutions from Cuba and abroad, such as the National Committee of the Program “Man and the Biosphere (MAB), of the UNESCO; the Institute of Ecology and Systematic (IES) of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA); the Ecological Station “Sierra del Rosario” of CITMA; the Tourist Resort “Las Terrazas”; the Botanic Garden “Orquideario de Soroa”; the International Organization of Universities for the Sustainable Development and Environment (OIUDSMA) and the Latin American Forum of Environmental Sciences (FLACAM).

 

Consequently, we exhort you to participate in COMADIBIO 2003, asking you to transmit this call for participation to other people and institutions you consider  convenient.

 

Hoping to achieve the full satisfaction of the visitors, on behave of the Organizational Committee, we wish you to enjoy a nice trip to Cuba and to achieve magnificent scientific and social results during your stay in the country that will welcome you friendly to make your presence unforgettable among us.

SUBSCRIPTION COST

 

The subscription cost for the event goes up to $ 150.00 U.S and it covers the distributed documents and the participation in all the scheduled activities.

 

NORMS FOR THE PRESENTATION OF ABSTRACTS

Delegates who wish to present papers at the conference must forward their abstracts to the members of the Scientific Commission no later than September, 1st, 2003.

 

The abstracts should be written in black letters, font size 10 to one space, in English or Spanish language, with a format of 8 1/2 inches (21,59cm x 27,94 cm), with a maximum of 250 words in only one page, and a margin of 2,5 cm on each side, elaborated with text processor WORD, version 6.0 or a better one.

 

Every abstract should begin with the title written in capital letters; below the name of the author or authors, below, the name of the institution and country; below, fax or E-mail; and afterwards, the text that should provide the information about the methods used, results and conclusions.

 

The abstracts may be sent by E-mail, fax or current post/mail, to the coordinator of the event before September the 1st, 2003 and the acceptance answer to the works will be given 15 days after being received, by e-mail, fax or current post.

 

The commission will set the definitions for each presentation and the authors will be advised as such.

 

 

NORMS FOR THE PRESENTATION OF WORKS

 

The deadline for the accepted works is October 1st, 2003.

 

The same norms for the presentation of the abstracts should be kept, except that the works will be written leaving 2 spaces and the maximum length will be of 10 pages.

 

The works may be sent by E-mail or by post (DHL, CUBAPAK, or similar ones) using a 3 1\2 diskette and a copy written in paper.

 

OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS

 

Before and at the end of the workshop, excursions to different places will be offered, mainly to the biosphere reserve “Sierra del Rosario”, where the participants will be able to visit places such as: Botanic Garden “Orquideario de Soroa”, the Ecological Research Station “Sierra del Rosario”, guided tours, the mountainous community “Las Terrazas”, hotel “Moka” , being in harmony with nature; several excursions and activities related to scientific research, environmental education and ecological tourism, which are offered in that place, are also added.

 

ACCEPTANCE-INVITATION LETTERS  

 

With the purpose of having the participants to ask for financial help in their country, the organization committee of “COMANDIBIO 2003” will release acceptance letters to the interested people, not only to the delegates presenting papers, but also to the observers without any work, for which the filling and sending of a document for pre-subscription is required. In the case of the expounders, it is also required to send the abstract of their proposal to expound.

 

VISA TO CUBA    

 

The organization committee of “COMANDIBIO 2003” will undertake all the possible actions to offer you a visa, which will be totally for free, if it is scanned by E-mail – will organize your visa free of charge if it is sent by e-mail as an attachment. However, if the information is faxed, please note that you will incur your own costs of faxing. In order to complete your visa, the following information is needed; on the other hand, if it is sent by fax, you should pay for the cost of your sending. To achieve that, it is of great importance that you could send us, before September the 1st, 2003, the following information: full name, date of birth, passport number, citizenship, residence address, date of arrival in Cuba, time of stay in Cuba, E-mail address, and fax number.

 

GRATIFICATIONS 

 

For those participants that will come accompanied by a group of 15 (fifteen) people, the Organization Committee of “COMANDIBIO 2003” – will not charge for the subscription fee together with other discounts granted by travel agencies. Will give them the possibility of not having to pay for the subscription fee, apart from the gratifications granted by the travel agencies.

 

ACCESS TO CUBA

 

UNIVERSITUR is the agency of the Cuban universities which manages academic, scientific and professional travel as well as specialized educational visits.
