Women and Environments International Magazine
Call for Submissions:
Women and Urban Sustainability (working title)
Spring 2006
Women and Environments International Magazine is looking for
submissions for its30^th Anniversary Issue focusing on urban
sustainability from an international and feminist perspective. The
magazine was founded in 1976 at the first UN Habitat conference in
Vancouver. This issue will contribute to the World Urban Forum that marks
the 30th anniversary of UN Habitat to be held in Vancouver in June 2006.
We encourage submissions that analyze urban sustainability from diverse
perspectives of gender, sexual identity, race, class, ability, age,
socio-cultural and regional differences among others.
Some suggested (but not exhaustive) areas of interest:
Gender Mainstreaming at the Municipal Level
·Gender responsive budget initiatives.
·Methods, tools and case studies for Gender mainstreaming.
·Models of women’s participation to local governance.
·Inclusive governance (gender, race, poverty, sexuality, ability etc).
Planning for Inclusive Cities
·Gender sensitive physical planning and urban design.
·Transportation.
·Criteria and examples of women friendly cities.
·Housing Design for safety and mobility from women’s perspectives.
Urban Sustainability with a Gender Inclusive Lens
·Women’s health in toxic and built environments.
·Women and nature in urban environments
·Urban agriculture.
·Violence free cities/cities for peace.
·Economic Imperatives vs. Social equity and environmental integrity. ·Time
and mobility
·Women, urban land and water rights.
Deadlines:
Abstracts or indications of interest by October 1st 2005.
(Consideration will begin as of August 2005). Final Manuscripts by
December 15 th 2006.
Writer’s Guidelines:
Papers should be written in English. Features should not exceed 2500
words. Shorter pieces, book and film reviews, poetry and artistic
expressions are welcome. Detailed editorial guidelines and information can

Women and Environments International:
Women & Environments International Magazine is a unique Canadian
magazine that examines women's relations to their natural, built, and
social environments: from feminist perspectives. WEI provides a forum for
academic research and theory as well as professional and community
practices and experiences.
