Notes on the Programmes of Study The programmes leading to the Associate degree of Bermuda College are at the university level and, therefore, have entrance requirements appropriate for programmes at that level. These requirements consist both of General Entry Requirements (set out in the section so headed), which are common to all Associate degrees, and Programme Entry Requirements (set out following the General Entry Requirements), which give details of any additional requirements specific to a particular programme. The Associate degrees of the Bermuda College differ from those found in the United States and parts of Canada and the West Indies in that they permit significantly greater concentration, in order that Bermuda College's graduates may have the opportunity to transfer into degree programmes at British and Canadian universities and the University of the West Indies with the maximum possibility for transfer credits or exemptions, while still satisfying the more general expectations of the 'Associate Degree' in North America. The programmes leading to the Certificates of Bermuda College have been designed with the assistance of Advisory Committees composed of employees in various fields. Candidates are thus ensured of the maximum opportunity to enter employment with qualifications recognised as representing skills and qualities of high standard. These programmes also have both General Entry Requirements and specific Programme Entry Requirements (set out in the sections so headed). Throughout this Bulletin, the following definitions of terms pertain: PROGRAMME: a combination of courses and/or modules meeting the requirements leading to an Associate degree or Certificate. MODULE: an instructional unit within a competency based on programme consisting of a group of skills. AREA OF STUDY: a major grouping of Subjects of Study, e.g. Humanities. SUBJECT OF STUDY: a discipline, e.g. Chemistry. COURSE: a standard unit which reflects the weight of a course in terms of the total weight of the programme. Normally, three credits are assigned to a course which meets for one semester and six credits are assigned to a course which meets for two semesters. CLASS: classes are normally scheduled for 3-5 hours per week, with additional sessions for each course for tutorials, laboratories, practicals, field trips and examinations. SEMESTER: a semester contains 14 weeks of instruction plus in examination period.

Note On Transfer To Colleges And Universities

Applicants for admission as transfer students to colleges and universities overseas may normally expect that their applications will be considered individually and on their merits, with appropriate credit being granted for courses completed at the Bermuda College upon a course-by-course assessment of the transcript.

No two institutions are precisely the same. Each institution, therefore, will determine the transfer credit granted, depending upon the contents of the applicant's transcript and the requirements of the programme for which application is made.

Applicants should expect to supply the course descriptions (as provided in this Bulletin) of those courses for which credit is being sought. Some institutions may request additional information in the form of the course syllabus (which can be provided upon written request to the College), titles of textbooks, or sample final examinations.

Bermuda College does not maintain official relationships with overseas institutions. Transfer applicants possessing a Bermuda College Associate degree may be, and have been, awarded as much as two years of standing by a large number of institutions in Canada and the United States. However, a number of overseas institutions and official bodies have established policies with respect to applicants who have completed Associate degree courses and programmes at Bermuda College.
