VON HUMBOLDT CONFERENCE 2003: “Travels, Travellers and Travel writing to and
from Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean, 15th to 20th
Centuries ”
The
Instituto de Investigaciones Históricas of the Universidad Michoacana de San
Nicolás de Hidalgo, located in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico, in colaboration with
Humboldt State University of Arcata, California, will commemorate the
bicentenary of Alexander von Humboldt’s visit to Michoacan by celebrating the

Alexander von Humboldt Conference: “Travels, Travellers and Travel Writing to
and from Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean, 15th to
20th Centuries”.
The Conference will be held in the Centro Cultural Universitario
of the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo, in the colonial city of
Morelia, state of Michoacan, Mexico, August 12-16,
2003.
Interested scholars and graduate students are invited to submit
papers by April 25th. It is required to submit an abstract of
no more than 250 words in English or Spanish, indicating paper’s title,
presenter’s name, affiliation, address (mail, email, telephone, fax) and a
suggestion of the Conference panel where to include the
paper.

The
Conference will include four Plenary Sessions and several parallel individual
presentations.
à
Only
one presentation per participant will be allowed.
à
The
official languages of the Conference will be English and Spanish. There will be
no simultaneous translation.
à
Reading
of the papers should not exceed 20 minutes (8 pages double spaced, 2000 words
approximately).
à
Proposals
for other panels according to the general theme of the Conference are welcome.
Potential panel chairs should send abstracts and details of all
participants
in
their proposed panel.
à
After
the Conference, the organizing members may select some papers for
publication.
à
Submissions
must be received by 25 April 2003. Notification of acceptance or rejection will
be made by 16 May 2003.
Registration fees:
$ 90 US Dollars for USA, Canadian and European
participants.
$ 45 US Dollars for Latin American participants and
others
$ 25 US Dollars for students
As part of the Conference, a visit to the town of Pátzcuaro will
be organised. Pátzcuaro, as well as Valladolid (nowadays Morelia), were places
visited by Humboldt in September 1803.
Information on hotels and transport to Morelia will be available
shortly.
