 > The Congress of Americanists has a long tradition among international
 >scholars from Humanities and Social Sciences studying issues related to the
 >American Continent. Previous meetings took place in New Orleans (1991),
 >Stockholm (1994), Quito (1997) and Warsaw (2000). In the last meeting,
 >University of Chile was appointed the organizer for the 51st Congress to be
 >held in Santiago do Chile in 2003. In this edition of the Congress, the
 >Organization Board agreed to promote a Symposium on American Environmental
 >History, to be organized by the Area of Ecological History of the University
 >of Chile.
 >
 > Objectives
 >
 > The Symposium on American Environmental History represents an opportunity
 >to divulge the different studies that are being developed in this field. In
 >this context, we hope the meeting will help to identify the crucial
 >questions and tendencies around which environmental history has evolved in
 >the region. At the same time, we hope that this opportunity of contact for
 >environmental historians will provide the basis for the establishment of
 >more permanent relationships, dialogue and collaboration.
 >

 > Requirements for the paper submission
 >
 > The Symposium is open to all studies on the interactions among societies
 >and their environment developed in the American continent, and their
 >consequent co-evolution. The invitation is not restrict to "environmental
 >historians", but extends also to all scholars who may contribute for the
 >development of American Environmental History. Works from related
 >disciplines such as historical geography, economic history or from other
 >areas in history with an explicit concern for some environmental dimension
 >will be welcome. Studies related to environmental politics and thinking are
 >also welcome.
 >
 > We give preference to original and unpublished contributions.
 >Nevertheless, works that have been published or presented recently in
 >restricted events or that have since undergone substantial modifications may
 >also be accepted.
 >
 > Symposium structure
 >
 > The Symposium sessions are structured in discussion tables, panel
 >discussions, conferences and round tables. Regardless the preferred
 >structure, communications or presentations assembled on a same panel -which
 >hopefully will focus on the same geographic area- must have a common
 >approach (methodological, thematic or temporal) in order to promote the
 >dialogue among the members of the group. Panels as well as the final
 >structure of the Symposium will be defined after the organization board
 >receives all the proposals.
 >
 > a) Discussion table: The speakers will have adequate time to present their
 >works. Once all presentations are done, a moderator will lead a debate.
 >
 > b) Panel discussion: A "commentator" will summarize the various papers,
 >pointing out the main aspects for debate and promoting dialogue among the
 >panel members and the audience.
 >
 > c) Conference: Two or more commentators may critically analyze papers or
 >presentations particularly stimulating, and open the debate to the audience.
 >
 > d) Roundtable: Less formal occasions for the participants to discuss
 >methodological or theoretical topics raised during the realization of the
 >Symposium.
 >
 > Timetable
 >
 > Panel members will be contacted as soon as their papers have been accepted
 >and the panels defined by the organization board. By doing so, we hope to
 >promote dialogue and cooperation among panel members even before the
 >beginning of the event. Therefore, we urge participants to observe the
 >deadlines below:
 >
 > By December 31st 2002. Submission of PROPOSALS. In order for the board to
 >assess fairly the quality of the proposals, the author must identify in the
 >proposal the sources and methodologies, as well as possible conclusions
 >or/and hypothesis. The organization board will select the best proposals
 >among all applications, and will draft a preliminary program of the meeting.
 >Proposals should range from 2,000 to 3,000 words.
 >
 > By May 16th 2003. Submission of the COMPLETE VERSION of the papers. The
 >complete version should be available for the commentators and moderators, as
 >well as for the other speakers, as early as possible. The final program will
 >be defined only after the organization board has the complete version for
 >all papers.
 >
 > By June 13th 2003. Submission of the paper abstract for publication. Each
 >participant will receive a publication with all paper abstracts at the
 >beginning of the Symposium.
 >
 > The organization of the Symposium has publishing agreement that will make
 >possible to publish selected papers, assembled in thematic volumes. The
 >selection will take place after the Symposium to incorporate eventual
 >modifications suggested to the authors during the event.
 >
 > Registration and deadline
 >
 > The registration fee for the Congress (either presenting papers or not) is
 >US$ 230. However, there are discounted fees for those registering in advance
 >(30% until the 31/12/02; and 13% until the 31/05/03). In addition to that,
 >the organization board may consider total or partial exemption of the
 >registration fee, as well as granting financial support for those who apply
 >for it before the 31 of December of the 2002 .
