A recent academic study statistics revealed that the total number
of Yemeni immigrants in Arab and African countries is estimated at
928,000, 72% of whom live in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia comprising
700,000. The Saudi Al-Yaum newspaper reported on 25/11/2003 that the
study prepared by Dr. Mohammed Al-Afandi, professor of economics at the
University of Sana’a, and titled ‘Motives and Economic Effects of the
Yemeni Immigration in the Gulf, and Horn of Africa’ indicated that Yemen
is faced with challenges and needs to reduce their effect on the economy.
For example, the failure to fulfill the market demand which is reported at
an annual growth rate of 5.2% is one of those challenges, as well as the
globalization pressures which call for the opening of local markets and
freedom of exchange.
