Post-graduate Programmes
Masters programme
South Africa

The previous format of the post-graduate programmes were changed with effect
from 2001 and are derived from the subprogrammes of the focus area:

The environmental science (M.Env.Sci.) masters programme incorporates the
previous honours programme, but has an exit level at honours level. Students can
specialise in environmental management; ecological remediation and sustainable
utilisation; biodiversity and conservation ecology; and, water sciences. The
first year is a lectured programme while the second year entails research and a
dissertation or thesis. A course in environmental management is compulsory in all
the streams.
In atmospheric chemistry a M.Sc. programme following an honours degree is
offered. This is a research-orientated degree.
A part-time structured masters programme, with an entry level of an appropriate
four-year degree, is offered in environmental management. This programme includes
a dissertation, which is normally aimed at applied research.
Part time students constitutes 65% which is an indication of the professional
nature of that depicts environmental science at this day and age. As far as
equity considerations are concerned 16% of the students are black and 47% are
female. It is obvious that work should be done to increase both of these ratios.
The financial resources available to the Focus Area will be geared towards this

Doctoral programme

The master’s programmes are followed by a PhD requiring basic or applied
research based on a theme of one of the subprogrammes or a specific participating
subject group.

Through internationalisation it is planned to by way of exchange programmes
increase the number of doctoral students (a weak point previously identified by
the University’s Testing Committee). Environmental management students are not
really showing interest in doctoral studies due to the professional nature of
their work. Possibilities to improve the situation are therefore limited.

Only 12% of the doctoral students are black and 40% female. One of the main
constraints are funding for competitive bursaries. This is an aspect that will be
pursued actively in terms of support from industry as well as 3rd income stream
