Celebrating the two-hundredth anniversary of Alexander von Humboldt's epochal journey of exploration of South America, Cuba and Mexico and his visit to the United States.

In commemoration of the visit from Alexander von Humboldt to the United States in 1804 at the invitation of President Thomas Jefferson, the Graduate Center of the City University of New York will host an interdisciplinary conference devoted to Humboldt and his legacy on October 14-16, 2004. The principal focus will be Humboldt's activity in, relationship to, and impact on the Americas, but all proposals will be considered.

 

Areas of interest include Humboldt's scientific work and publications, political ideas and advocacy of human rights, paintings, travel writing, friendships, as well as his fame, image and influence in various parts of the Americas.

Proposals for papers should consist of: (a) a concise (300 words or less) abstract with title, and (b) a cover letter indicating the author's professional affiliation(s) and contact information.
