MICRONESIA

The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) consists of (1) the four island groups/states represented by purple dots-Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae, and (2) the million plus square miles of ocean surrounding the islands. It's a small developing country with a population of slightly over 105,000 and a per-capita income of about $2,000 per year

The FSM's total land area amounts to only 271 square miles extending 1,700 miles from west (Yap) to east (Kosrae). The 133 square mile island of Pohnpei is the largest in the FSM and home of the country's capital, Palikir. FSM emerged as a nation in 1979 from the former United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI). The FSM is currently in a political treaty with the United States called the Compact of Free Association .
