The School
of Environmental Studies was established at Moi University in 1986, with a
mandate to provide leadership in the area of Environmental Studies in all
its aspects in Kenya. |
The School focuses on postgraduate programmes leading to Masters and Doctoral
degrees.
A postgraduate diploma programme around the thematic topics and certificate
courses have also been initiated. The school has eight divisions offering
specialised courses. These are: Environmental Biological Sciences, Environmental
Economics, Environmental Health, Environmental information, Systems,
Environmental Law, Physical sciences, Environmental Planning and Management of
Human Ecology. For purpose of administration the divisions have been clustered
under the following headships:

The
School of Social, Cultural and Development Studies came into being in 1978
but admitted its first students in 1988. The main aim of the School; as
envisioned by the Mackay Report of 1981, is to offer arts based BA, M.Phil
and D.Phil. programmes in a predominantly technological University.
Apart from training its own students, the school offers service
courses to all other faculties, especially the Faculty of
Education. |
Because of the need to forge an even closer inter-disciplinary approach,
various disciplines have been re-packaged to constitute seven new degree
programmes namely:
BA-Cultural studies, BA-Social Studies, BA-Economics, BA-Geography, BA
Creative Arts, BA-Language and Literary Studies and Bachelor of Business
Management (BBM).
Because real life situations do not demand over-specialisation in one
discipline, there are university-wide, school-wide, divisional, discipline of
major and elective courses in prescribed proportions aimed at producing an
all-round graduate. The school also gives students an opportunity to learn an
extra course in either a new language, accounting or computing, regardless of
the area of specialisation. There are six departments in the school offering
masters programmes. These are History, Geography, Philosophy, Linguistics,
Kiswahili and Religion. Two departments, Religion and Kiswahili, offer Doctorate
programmes
SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES
Departments Graduate
Studies |
|
The School of Graduate Studies provides central co-ordinating services for
all matters pertaining to graduate programmes. However, lectures and research
are undertaken in the various teaching departments. Applications for admission
into any graduate programme are processed initially by the School of Graduate
Studies. The entry requirements for Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.)are a First
Class or Upper Second Class Honours degree recognised by the Senate. Holders of
Lower Second Class Honours degrees may also be considered if in addition to the
degree, they possess a postgraduate qualification or have research experience as
evidenced by at least one refereed publication. On the other hand, a relevant
Masters degree is the minimum entry requirement for Doctor of Philosophy
(D.Phil.) candidates.
MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAMMES
M.Phil. programmes are conducted by course work, examination and thesis. They
last two years, and are divided into four semesters. The second year is largely
devoted to field work and/or laboratory research and thesis writing. Students
are, however, expected to take some courses in their fourth semester to ensure
that they remain on campus and maintain contact with their supervisors while
writing their theses.
The School offers the following Master of Phylosophy degree
