ESTABLISHMENT

On September 14, 1992, the parliament of Kurdistan Region issued a decree establishing University of Dohuk, to be comprised of two colleges: College of Medicine and College of Agriculture. The University enrolled students almost at the beginning of the academic year 1992/1993. The first semester started on October 31, 1992. Afterwards, more colleges were opened. As a complementary to the University structure, many scientific centers were established in the University during the past years. Postgraduate Studies leading to both M.Sc. and M.A. degrees were commenced in the University in 1997. Afterwards, in 1998, postgraduate studies leading to Ph.D. degree were started. In the academic year 1998/1999, the University is internationally recognized as a member of International Association of Universities (IAU).

FINANCE

Dohuk University is a state university affiliated with the Council of Higher Education and Scientific Research and is supported by the Kurdistan Regional Government. The study in the University is free of charge for students who are citizens of Kurdistan Region. The University carries on its tasks depending on an annual budget allocated by the government.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS

The main purpose of initializing and insisting to persuade postgraduate studies (Master and Ph.D. degrees) is to prepare academic staff for the near and far future for the University of Dohuk as well as for other universities and technical institutes in Kurdistan Region, Iraq. There are no alternatives because regional university graduates are forbidden to persuade their postgraduate studies in the universities under the control of the Central Government in Baghdad (due to a decree by that Government). On the other hand, there are no means for the University graduates and the staff to persuade their studies abroad.

M.Sc. and M.A. Program

Postgraduate studies were started in Dohuk University in the academic year (1996/1997). The program consists of three semesters of advanced courses that terminate by written examinations. Total credit units of the courses is 24 to 28 units. The minimum pass degree in each examination is 60% and the minimum average mark of all examinations must be at least 70%. If the student passed the courses successfully, he may continue a one year research work in his/her field of study of which he/her must submit a thesis at the end of the year. Total credit units of the thesis is 8 to 12 units. The research period can be extended six months if required. Finally, the student must defend his/her thesis in front of a professional and specialized examination committee consisting of at least three members (at least one external) in addition to his/her supervisor. The program leads to M.Sc. or M.A. degree.

Ph.D. Program

Ph.D. programs were started in Dohuk University in the academic year (1998/1999). The candidate should have Master degree. The program consists of three or four semesters of advanced courses that terminate by written examinations. The candidate should pass a specialized grand examination for his/her registration for Ph.D. to be fulfilled. The minimum pass degree in each examination is 60% and the minimum average mark of all examinations must be at least 70%. If the student passed the courses successfully, he may continue for at least two year research work in his/her field of study of which he/she must submit a thesis. The thesis has to be evaluated by a specialized academician abroad.
