Asunto:[ajedrezlapalma] Rybka is a work of art
Fecha:Lunes, 12 de Diciembre, 2005  01:16:36 (-0000)
Autor:Lucas Mendoza <lumenco @...............com>

How come that the beta version of a freeware engine can beat the strongest chess programs? I think the answer is: knowledge.

Rybka 1.0 Beta is not fast at all. It calculates at 60 kilonodes/sec on my modest AMD 2Ghz, while Shredder can reach 270 kn/s average, Fritz around 600 kn/s and Junior even 1.000 kn/s. But Rybka can beat them all because it always finds the best PLAN, even when it can't find the best MOVES.

This kind of programming is more than science. It has something to do with art. It's based on intuition.

Take a look at these 4 games, played at 10 min with 5 sec Fischer bonus. Rybka won 4-0 against Shredder 9.1 UCI. And note that the same positions were repeated twice with different colors. One position is the b6 advance in the Benko Gambit, the other is a complex variation of the Modern Benoni.

Note that on games 1 and 3, Rybka sacrifices the exchange and simply keeps playing until the advantage becomes clear. Pawn sacrifices for initiative are common too. One can see that the calculation is based not on material, but on strategic values. A joy to watch.

Copy and paste on CB 8/9 or Friz 8/9:
